The Impact of Canada’s New Immigration Plan on International Students

On Friday, November 1, 2024, Canada released details on the new immigration plan for 2024-2026 and the situation is not looking promising for international students in Canada. The new immigration plan aims to raise the number of permanent residents each year starting at 485,000 in 2024 and around 500,000 by 2025-26. This plan focuses on attracting immigrants to help the Canadian economy grow by making the new immigrants fill important jobs that are relatively vacant. The new plan also emphasizes bringing in more French-speaking immigrants and supporting immigrant housing as well as health care. These new immigration policies may look promising at first, but in reality, they have had a detrimental effect on international students in Canada as they wonder what their future will look like.
